Chicago Fire FC goalkeeper Kenneth Kronholm sustained a torn ACL in training and will undergo season-ending surgery, coach Raphael Wicky announced.
"Kenny is still under contract and he's a really good goalkeeper with a lot of experience and he will come back stronger," Wicky said in a conference call with reporters on Saturday, adding the injury occurred earlier in the week. "That's also the goal he set for himself directly after having the injury. On the same day he told me. He was very touched and emotional, but he's going to come back stronger."
Wicky announced that Bobby Shuttleworth, 33, will serve as the team's starting goalkeeper, with Connor Sparrow and Gabriel Slonina to stand in as backups.
"I'm happy with all three goalkeepers. I trust all three and we go from there," Wicky said.
Kronholm, 34, has posted a 7-9-9 record in 25 career MLS matches since joining Chicago following a transfer from Holstein Kiel in Germany on May 7, 2019. He owns a 1-3-1 mark in five matches this season for the Fire (1-3-1), who return to action on Aug. 20 when they visit the Columbus Crew.
In his 12th MLS season, Shuttleworth has a 65-82-36 record with the New England Revolution (2009-16) and Minnesota United (2017-19). He has yet to appear in a game with the Fire.
